Conference "RuhrKunstMuseen sinnlich erleben"

The conference "RuhrKunstMuseen sinnlich erleben" took place on 26th of August 2016 in the Lehmbruck. In North Rhine-Westphalia 300.000 people are living with a diagnosis of dementia. The goal of the nationwide project "Local alliances for people with dementia" was to help them to live a normal everyday life. Within this framework, the three-year network project "RuhrKunstMuseen sinnlich erleben" was created under the leadership of the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg. Findings of a study led by the Medical School Hamburg, which explored methods of art education for people with dementia at the Lehmbruck Museum between 2012 and 2015, enriched the project. In the end of the project, in September 2016, visitors with dementia and their caregivers were welcomed in 11 art museums of the region. The diversity of cultural participation in the area is a good result. It helps to improve the everyday life of people with dementia and their relatives.

On the conference at the Lehmbruck Museum the participants listened to lectures about the relevance of cultural participation for people with dementia, they heard about projects in the Netherlands and they could experience guided tours led by art educator of different museum with the focus on methods related to the senses. Invited were specialists, affected persons and relatives.
